Proven Effectiveness
The Building Bridges of Understanding portfolio of materials was developed in the context of the Behavioral Health Integration Program (BHIP) of the Pediatric Physicians’ Organization at Children’s (PPOC). The PPOC is a statewide independent pediatric primary care network affiliated with Boston Children’s Hospital. BHIP has 3 key components: behavioral health education for PPOC pediatric primary care practitioners (PCPs), psychiatric consultation for PPOC PCPs, and integration of behavioral health clinicians (BHCs) into PPOC practices. Over the past decade, BHIP has been found to -
Be feasible, acceptable, & highly adopted among PCPs
Increase PCPs' and BHCs' behavioral health knowledge, skills, & confidence
Increase behavioral health integration in pediatric primary care
Improve access to behavioral health services
Behavioral health screening
Behavioral health evaluation & management visits to PCPs
Psychotherapy visits to BHCs
Conform to national clinical practice guidelines for safe & effective prescribing of psychiatric medications
Work synergistically with child psychiatry access programs to maintain management of mild to moderate behavioral health problems in pediatric primary care
Improve behavioral health symptoms and function in pediatric patients
Be sustainable over more than a decade of implementation
These findings are detailed in published articles.
